Praying to the Sea (Gweddio i'r Mor)

by Jim Bartlett

           This, the land of my fathers over five generations,
           While the wind blows the pampas, we remember the shore
           Of the far land of Cymru, where my great, great grandfather,
           For his god and his language, cried his gweddio i'r mor

                 Chorus: Tro pob ton ar y mor o rai bach tawel gwastad
                 Yn rhai gwyllt mawr i gario fi draw o'r fan hyn!
                 Change the waves of the sea from their calm, peaceful sway
                 To those wild ocean rollers that can carry me away!

           They were two months aboard the Liverpool brig Mimosa,
           Before riding the pampas in their hard life ashore,
           But a century later and Trelew lacks adventure;
           Where's the challenge I am seeking? I am gweddio i'r mor!

           Now my plea has been answered by our laws of conscription;
           No more riding the pampas! Come, Malvinas! Come, war!
           But the Welsh Guards surround me; I am prisoner taken
           And my heart breaks to hear them singing Gweddio i'r Mor!

           Disillusioned and hungry, Buenos Aires surrounds me,
           Where I pine for the pampas and the life led of yore.
           From the Camwy, like Rachel, I would dig dykes and ditches
           Just to hear the sweet Cymraeg crying gweddio i'r mor.
